FAQ - Clip-In Pedals

All Crankbrothers clip-in pedal systems contain two pedals (one left pedal, one right pedal), one pair of cleats with mounting hardware, and one Crankbrothers icon sticker.

Most Crankbrothers clip-in pedals come with our 6-degree float, Standard Release cleats. Our Candy 1, Eggbeater 1, and Double Shot 1 pedals come with our Easy Release cleats instead, with a smaller release angle required to unclip but still featuring 6 degrees of float.

Although closely related, float and release angle refer to separate characteristics of our cleats. "Float" is what we call the amount of rotational free play while clipped-in, whereas "Release Angle" refers to the angle of rotation of the cleat required to completely exit from the pedal, ie "unclip".

All standard bicycle pedal spindles are threaded specifically for either the left or right side of your bike, ours included - it's important to double check you're installing the correct pedal to the matching crank arm to avoid damage. A close inspection of the flange of the pedal spindle will indicate either Left side (with a grooved flange) or Right side (with a flat flange).

You'll need an 8mm hex wrench and bike grease for proper installation of your pedals - watch our tutorial here!

Maintenance schedules can vary greatly depending on riding conditions and mileage, but as a general rule of thumb, we recommend a seasonal re-grease of the internal components to keep things running smoothly. We also offer refresh kits with new bearings, seals, and hardware when a full overhaul is desired. Pro tip: Avoid using a pressure washer at close distances to clean your pedals, as water could get past the external seals and displace the grease your pedals need to spin freely.

No - SPD cleats won't work with our pedals.

Although we always recommend using Crankbrothers shoes featuring MATCH Technology for an optimized setup right out of the box, any MTB or Gravel shoes which feature a recessed two-hole cleat mounting box are compatible with our pedal system. With third-party footwear, it may be necessary to use additional shims or traction pads to fine-tune the shoe-to-pedal interface [pro tip: use our Cleat Tool to find your ideal shim setup]. In addition, you can even adapt a three-hole road shoe to be compatible with our Eggbeater or Candy pedals with the use of our adapter kit.

OOH Shiny

"Awesome pedals, I like the flat stable pedal surface combined with eggbeater float and ease of clip-in/out. The traction pads are great to switch out for wear and a tighter shoe fit. I added titanium spindles for the weight loss and bling factor. Have used CB egg beaters and candy's for over 10 years and love them."

Ryan (5/5)

"This is one of my go to pedals, i have them on 4 different bikes and love them!"

Christopher (5/5)

Love these pedals.

"I love these pedals. I started out with spd's but their poor engagement in mud made me abandon them. I then tried the Candy pedals, starting with the Candy 1: light and with a great engagement in mud and wet conditions, a real joy. When it came time to change them (the Candy 1s were plastic at the time), I opted for Candy 7s. They're unbelievable: well-finished, a very slim design, a very good XC/Trail support surface, clean and easy engagement/disengagement, they're sturdy and repairable, made to last. I particularly recommend them !"

Love em. Had Doubleshot 3’s

"Love em. Had Doubleshot 3’s prior to the Candys because I thought I’d use the platform side but never did. Candy 7’s are way lighter and 4 sided entry means I never have to put in much effort to clip in. 10/10 would recommend"

I bought these about 2

"I bought these about 2 hours before my xc race at Sea Otter this year! The cage broke on my Candy 11's and I went to the Crankbrothers tent asked the rep what could be done to fix them and he said it needs to be replaced. He said he had a pair of Candy 7's. I didn't want to take any chances, so I bought them. I hurried back to my truck, installed the pedals and cleats. I got on the bike to test them out and the new pedals and cleat cleats felt very solid. The race went well, and I was very pleased with pedals. I sent the 6 year old Candy 11's to Crankbrothers for the standard service. The turn around was very fast, about a week, which I was pleasantly surprised. I have been going back and forth as to which pedals I like better, the 11's are lighter, but I feel the 7's are little more solid/ rigid and provide a better transfer of power. Maybe there was a design improvement or it is just the feel of something brand new is always better. Anyhow, thanks again for the help at Sea Otter, making a great product and providing excellent customer service!"

Pretty nice feeling. It engages

"Pretty nice feeling. It engages with snow with no issues. Easy to release. The only down side is the color of the springs get scratched right away."

Miguel H. (5/5)

Great Bikepacking & Cyclocross pedals!

"I have multiple sets of these pedals because they shed mud and dirt off your shoes every time you clip in, have 4 points of engagement so there’s never a missed clip in, they don’t need to be greased, they come in Great colors to match your bike, and they have a nice sized platform (so if you need to ride without you Cycling shoes you can). I highly recommend these pedals for Bikepacking, Cyclocross training & racing, MTB riding, and Gravel racing! I’ve been out Bikepacking for 10 months and have nothing but great things to say about these pedals!!!"

Seth K. (5/5)

I have always loved these

"I have always loved these pedals. I could probably go to the egg beaters and be fine. . . . But I like the look and color of these ones. I got the more difficult release angle this time and it's great! I feel so much more strength on the pull with no fear of popping out."
