Your feet are packed with thousands of sweat glands and a dense network of blood vessels, all of which help your body keep cool when temperatures rise.

As your efforts increase amid toasty conditions, blood vessels near the skin expand, allowing more warm blood to flow toward the surface, where heat can be released. Simultaneously, sweat glands produce moisture that evaporates from the skin, helping cool the surrounding tissues and carry excess heat away from the body. Cool eh?

Well, only if your shoes are well ventilated and let that heat out into the surroundings. If instead, the heat becomes trapped, your body’s cooling process becomes less effective. There's a lot that goes into a new shoe. It's countless ideas, prototypes, tests, and continuous refinement. The Vent lineup was no exception.

What was the main development goal throughout development for the Vent lineup?

"With the Vent lineup, we set out to create flat and clip-in shoes that perform best when temperatures are highest. Think blazing-hot summer rides. Whether you’re kicking up dust or riding in humid conditions, airflow is key to staying cool. That’s why loads of built-in ventilation was an absolute must."

Where are the major differences in construction between the Standard Trail and Vent shoes?

"The primary differences are in the upper materials. We tested a variety of options for breathability and abrasion resistance, aiming to find a solution that excelled at both.

Because creek crossings are more common in summer, we also made sure the shoes dry quickly. The materials absorb very little water and drain extremely well, so the shoes dry fast.

We kept the same levels of foot protection and support as our other Trail shoes, so the toe and heel reinforcements remain unchanged.

The Speedlace system (a favorite of ours for its ease of use) is carried over from other Trail models. The non-stretch laces hold your foot securely all day."

Which materials and design elements played the biggest role in maximizing airflow?

"The airy, highly resilient poly-mesh lets air pass directly across a large area of the foot. We chose a mesh weave that’s tight enough to limit dust intrusion but open enough to allow excellent airflow. You can genuinely feel the breeze on your feet while riding.

We also added plenty of perforated ventilation holes throughout the upper and tongue to increase airflow and help exhaust heat. Perforations in the insole further help move water, sweat, and warmth away from the foot."

Has the outsole remained the same or have changes been made there as well?

"Why mess with a great thing? The versatile Trail outsole is unchanged. It delivers the same strong outdoor aesthetic and proven technical performance on mountain bike terrain — including aggressive toe and heel lugs for when you’re off the bike. The Vent shoes use the exact same outsole as our standard and BOA Trail models."
