FAQ - Clip-In Pedals

All Crankbrothers clip-in pedal systems contain two pedals (one left pedal, one right pedal), one pair of cleats with mounting hardware, and one Crankbrothers icon sticker.

Most Crankbrothers clip-in pedals come with our 6-degree float, Standard Release cleats. Our Candy 1, Eggbeater 1, and Double Shot 1 pedals come with our Easy Release cleats instead, with a smaller release angle required to unclip but still featuring 6 degrees of float.

Although closely related, float and release angle refer to separate characteristics of our cleats. "Float" is what we call the amount of rotational free play while clipped-in, whereas "Release Angle" refers to the angle of rotation of the cleat required to completely exit from the pedal, ie "unclip".

All standard bicycle pedal spindles are threaded specifically for either the left or right side of your bike, ours included - it's important to double check you're installing the correct pedal to the matching crank arm to avoid damage. A close inspection of the flange of the pedal spindle will indicate either Left side (with a grooved flange) or Right side (with a flat flange).

You'll need an 8mm hex wrench and bike grease for proper installation of your pedals - watch our tutorial here!

Maintenance schedules can vary greatly depending on riding conditions and mileage, but as a general rule of thumb, we recommend a seasonal re-grease of the internal components to keep things running smoothly. We also offer refresh kits with new bearings, seals, and hardware when a full overhaul is desired. Pro tip: Avoid using a pressure washer at close distances to clean your pedals, as water could get past the external seals and displace the grease your pedals need to spin freely.

No - SPD cleats won't work with our pedals.

Although we always recommend using Crankbrothers shoes featuring MATCH Technology for an optimized setup right out of the box, any MTB or Gravel shoes which feature a recessed two-hole cleat mounting box are compatible with our pedal system. With third-party footwear, it may be necessary to use additional shims or traction pads to fine-tune the shoe-to-pedal interface [pro tip: use our Cleat Tool to find your ideal shim setup]. In addition, you can even adapt a three-hole road shoe to be compatible with our Eggbeater or Candy pedals with the use of our adapter kit.

Great xc pedals, super easy

"Great xc pedals, super easy entry, recommend getting lower float cleats if you want to ride them on gravel. 4 sided entry is great and useful when finding you clips. If you want these you’ll like em."

Finally had to replace my

"Finally had to replace my 1st gen Eggbeater pedals, when I couldn't get them reassbembled after taking them apart to give them a proper cleaning. Loving these new ones and expect they'll be easier to clean and rebuild."

Matched my Blue Suede Shoes

"Simple, elegant, and in a variety of colors. You want a connection? You are literally the pedal axle, it's like slamming your foot into an electrical outlet, just waiting for the watts to flow through. Daily life: They are the perfect curb/kickstand! what are you going to scratch? Stainless steel? Like their brass cleats they give no F’s? "You're not riding my bike" Anti-theft design, I live in Memphis, TN. They do everything, and do it well."

Best XC Pedal

"I have been running the same pair of Eggbeater 3's for probably 4 years now and they have caused me no problems in that time. They have outlived multiple bikes and have survived some abysmal mud and snow conditions, as well as carrying me through dozens of XC and singlespeed endurance races. They are ridiculously light and reliable. Also, they have a decent amount of float, but I actually find this beneficial for being fluid on descents. They will probably serve me well for years to come after a bearing overhaul."

Eggbeater 3 Clip-In Pedals are

"Eggbeater 3 Clip-In Pedals are the near perfect connection between me and my bike. I have used many different XC/CX pedals and have found that most of them will not release consistently when mud or sand grit gets on them. Eggbeater 3 Pedals release the same every time whether it is a freezing muddy CX course or a dusty desert odyssey."
