FAQ - Clip-In Pedals

All Crankbrothers clip-in pedal systems contain two pedals (one left pedal, one right pedal), one pair of cleats with mounting hardware, and one Crankbrothers icon sticker.

Most Crankbrothers clip-in pedals come with our 6-degree float, Standard Release cleats. Our Candy 1, Eggbeater 1, and Double Shot 1 pedals come with our Easy Release cleats instead, with a smaller release angle required to unclip but still featuring 6 degrees of float.

Although closely related, float and release angle refer to separate characteristics of our cleats. "Float" is what we call the amount of rotational free play while clipped-in, whereas "Release Angle" refers to the angle of rotation of the cleat required to completely exit from the pedal, ie "unclip".

All standard bicycle pedal spindles are threaded specifically for either the left or right side of your bike, ours included - it's important to double check you're installing the correct pedal to the matching crank arm to avoid damage. A close inspection of the flange of the pedal spindle will indicate either Left side (with a grooved flange) or Right side (with a flat flange).

You'll need an 8mm hex wrench and bike grease for proper installation of your pedals - watch our tutorial here!

Maintenance schedules can vary greatly depending on riding conditions and mileage, but as a general rule of thumb, we recommend a seasonal re-grease of the internal components to keep things running smoothly. We also offer refresh kits with new bearings, seals, and hardware when a full overhaul is desired. Pro tip: Avoid using a pressure washer at close distances to clean your pedals, as water could get past the external seals and displace the grease your pedals need to spin freely.

No - SPD cleats won't work with our pedals.

Although we always recommend using Crankbrothers shoes featuring MATCH Technology for an optimized setup right out of the box, any MTB or Gravel shoes which feature a recessed two-hole cleat mounting box are compatible with our pedal system. With third-party footwear, it may be necessary to use additional shims or traction pads to fine-tune the shoe-to-pedal interface [pro tip: use our Cleat Tool to find your ideal shim setup]. In addition, you can even adapt a three-hole road shoe to be compatible with our Eggbeater or Candy pedals with the use of our adapter kit.

Great, light pedals. Always works

"Great, light pedals. Always works no mater how much frozen sloppy mud or sand."

Charles S. (5/5)

I have been using these

"I have been using these for years and never had an issue. Just finished the 6 day. Reck Epic on these - not a single issue! I do send my pedals to the factory for periodic refresh and that is the secret to problem free riding!"

Filip R. (5/5)

Best pedals for bad knees

"I have knee issues and I have always appreciated the extra little bit of float compared to the pedals I have used in the past. Crank Brothers are on ALL the bikes in the garage."

Mat F. (5/5)

These are beautiful, very lightweight

"These are beautiful, very lightweight and easy to use. They hold my shoe firmly in place. I switched to them on both my all-road and gravel bikes. I have used several types of road and mountain pedals over the years. These are among the best."

Dwight H. (5/5)

Not only are these lightweight

"Not only are these lightweight but they work exceptionally well. There is good float and release is easy and yet while locked in your foot feels secure. These pedals are on both of the MTB bikes and my gravel bike. When I travel to Europe I put them on my road bike so that walking around is easy. You cannot go wrong with Eggbeaters and if you want the lightest, then the 11 is for you."
