FAQ - Clip-In Pedals

All Crankbrothers clip-in pedal systems contain two pedals (one left pedal, one right pedal), one pair of cleats with mounting hardware, and one Crankbrothers icon sticker.

Most Crankbrothers clip-in pedals come with our 6-degree float, Standard Release cleats. Our Candy 1, Eggbeater 1, and Double Shot 1 pedals come with our Easy Release cleats instead, with a smaller release angle required to unclip but still featuring 6 degrees of float.

Although closely related, float and release angle refer to separate characteristics of our cleats. "Float" is what we call the amount of rotational free play while clipped-in, whereas "Release Angle" refers to the angle of rotation of the cleat required to completely exit from the pedal, ie "unclip".

All standard bicycle pedal spindles are threaded specifically for either the left or right side of your bike, ours included - it's important to double check you're installing the correct pedal to the matching crank arm to avoid damage. A close inspection of the flange of the pedal spindle will indicate either Left side (with a grooved flange) or Right side (with a flat flange).

You'll need an 8mm hex wrench and bike grease for proper installation of your pedals - watch our tutorial here!

Maintenance schedules can vary greatly depending on riding conditions and mileage, but as a general rule of thumb, we recommend a seasonal re-grease of the internal components to keep things running smoothly. We also offer refresh kits with new bearings, seals, and hardware when a full overhaul is desired. Pro tip: Avoid using a pressure washer at close distances to clean your pedals, as water could get past the external seals and displace the grease your pedals need to spin freely.

No - SPD cleats won't work with our pedals.

Although we always recommend using Crankbrothers shoes featuring MATCH Technology for an optimized setup right out of the box, any MTB or Gravel shoes which feature a recessed two-hole cleat mounting box are compatible with our pedal system. With third-party footwear, it may be necessary to use additional shims or traction pads to fine-tune the shoe-to-pedal interface [pro tip: use our Cleat Tool to find your ideal shim setup]. In addition, you can even adapt a three-hole road shoe to be compatible with our Eggbeater or Candy pedals with the use of our adapter kit.

"solid pedal, classic Crank bros feel. look really sexy"

Awesome pedals. Great trail feel

"Awesome pedals. Great trail feel and wonderful platform that nicely balances power transfer with bike handling. Just beware - if you live in a rocky area, the finish is very vulnerable and will show strikes (basis for going to 4 stars)."

Matthew T. (4/5)

They look awesome, are light

"They look awesome, are light weight, clip are just as reliable as their regular Mallets"

Christopher F. (5/5)

Solid feel under my shoe.

"Solid feel under my shoe. Feels nice and snug. Still not that light, but light for their size.Typical Crank Brothers clipping feel. Happy so far."

Michael W. (5/5)

"The best pedals I’ve ever used. Easy entry/exit."

Cody C. (5/5)

Super easy to get in

"Super easy to get in and out of. Great platform for optimal control when riding. And looks cool!"

Timothy B. (5/5)

Awesome dependable clip in pedals and incredible bang for the buck!

"I have really enjoyed using these pedals on both my mountain and gravel bikes especially when electing not to use flats. Typically if I am going to be doing a ride with a good amount of or technical areas, I will switch my flats out and use the clip in pedals. They work well with my shoes and love the adjustability of the pressure and angle of the clip in and out parameters. Great pedals for anyone looking for a dependable consistent clip in style. I would definitely recommend you take a look at adding these to your pedal arsenal."

Shawn F. (5/5)

Great pedal, worth it?

"It’s a great pedal, and coming from the original Mallet E I don’t know if it’s worth the extra money. Both are great pedals and maybe the durability of this one will pay off in the long run. Though the black and gold color scheme is a definite nice touch"

Joshua A. (4/5)

Super solid pedal!

"Fantastic enduro pedal! Great quality and light for a platform/cleat!"
